Throughout the tour FOH engineer Chris <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Edrich<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> and monitor engineer <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Samuel<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Chadwick <\/span><span class=\"s6\">handled their mixes on<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> All<\/span><span class=\"s6\">en &amp; Heath <\/span><span class=\"s6\">dLive<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> C1500 control surfaces, sharing a CDM32 Mix Rack between the two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s6\">Supplied by STS Touring Productions and Pulse PA, the C1500s were chosen for their unique combination of small size, comprehensive feature set and excellent sound<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">as Chadwick (who has previous experience touring <\/span><span class=\"s6\">dLive<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> with Alter Bridge <\/span><span class=\"s6\">frontman<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> Myles Kennedy) explains, \u201cThe C1500\/CDM package is incredible for touring. Although the venues we\u2019re playing are similar capacities, the differences in stage size <\/span><span class=\"s6\">etc<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> are significant. But the CDM is easy to fit in anywhere and I\u2019ve never had a set-up this size that\u2019s so functional and <\/span><span class=\"s6\">so <\/span><span class=\"s6\">\u2018<\/span><span class=\"s6\">musical<\/span><span class=\"s6\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s6\">,<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> for the want of a better word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s6\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got the <\/span><span class=\"s6\">gigaACE<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> networking<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> card in the CDM32 so that we can run both C1500 surfaces on the single <\/span><span class=\"s6\">MixRack<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> and we\u2019re breaking out into two DX168s on the drum riser<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> (with an additional DX168 at FOH providing additional I\/O where necessary)<\/span><span class=\"s6\">, which are <\/span><span class=\"s6\">daisychained<\/span><span class=\"s6\">. It\u2019s all very <\/span><span class=\"s6\">streamlined and <\/span><span class=\"s6\">i<\/span><span class=\"s6\">t\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s6\">been totally flawless for the whole tour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11114\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_25-1024x668.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_25-1024x668.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_25-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_25-768x501.jpg 768w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_25-1536x1002.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_25-2048x1336.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_25-600x391.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s6\">All <\/span><span class=\"s6\">dLive<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> systems support <\/span><span class=\"s6\">MultiSurface<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> mode, enabling the use of up to <\/span><span class=\"s6\">two<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> surfaces with a CDM <\/span><span class=\"s6\">MixRack<\/span><span class=\"s6\">or up to <\/span><span class=\"s6\">four<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> Surfaces with a DM <\/span><span class=\"s6\">MixRack<\/span><span class=\"s6\">. With preamp gain tracking and compensation, plus flexible options for each Surface\u2019s access to the <\/span><span class=\"s6\">MixRack\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> 128 input channels 64 busses and 500 Scenes, <\/span><span class=\"s6\">MultiSurface<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> is ideally suited to sub-64 channel FOH\/MON applications, parallel mixing (for instance<\/span><span class=\"s6\">,<\/span><span class=\"s6\">discrete main stage and B-stage control surfaces), or multi-operator sub-mixing on larger shows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s6\">While Chadwick has programmed scenes for each song in the set &#8211; and sometimes switches between scenes every few bars to ensure the perfect IEM mix \u2013 <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Edrich<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> takes what he describes as a \u201cmore old-school\u201d approach at FOH.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s6\">\u201cI really like mixing in a very hands-on way,\u201d he says, \u201cI have an IP8 Remote Controller working in conjunction with my C1500 \u2013 I love having those few extra faders for my FX returns and tracks that I need access to regularly. Even though it\u2019s a small-format surface I find the C1500 very tactile and great to mix in this way with.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11115\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_13-1024x687.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_13-1024x687.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_13-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_13-768x516.jpg 768w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_13-1536x1031.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_13-2048x1375.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/distribution.audio-technica.eu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Devin_Townsend_AH_UEA_13-600x403.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s6\">Neither <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Edrich<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> nor Chadwick rely on external effects, preferring to use the <\/span><span class=\"s6\">dLive\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> impressive built-in processing capabilities, with both singling out the <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Dyn8<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> EQ\/multiband compressor for particular praise. \u201cI love the <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Dyn8<\/span><span class=\"s6\">,\u201d confirms <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Edrich<\/span><span class=\"s6\">. \u201cI have them on inputs, sub-groups \u2013 it\u2019s really useful for Devin\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s6\">vo<\/span><span class=\"s6\">cals<\/span><span class=\"s6\">because he uses a lot of head-voice, which adds a lot of resonance, so the <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Dyn8<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> keeps it really controlled and clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s6\">\u201cI have a subgroup with Dev\u2019s voice that I can use to compress everything between 350Hz and 4kHz<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> on the backing tracks<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> &#8211; t<\/span><span class=\"s6\">hat band is compressed by Dev\u2019s voice<\/span><span class=\"s6\">,<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> so they\u2019re ducked when he sings. Super-useful. I\u2019m at the point where I really have no need for external effects because the <\/span><span class=\"s6\">dLive<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> is so good<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s6\">everything\u2019s rock-solid, <\/span><span class=\"s6\">with <\/span><span class=\"s6\">no added latency at all.<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> It\u2019s a really fantastic all-in-one <\/span><span class=\"s6\">touring <\/span><span class=\"s6\">system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian progressive metal pioneer Devin Townsend recently completed a European and UK tour in support of his latest album, 2022\u2019s \u2018Lightwork\u2019, taking in shows from Oslo to Milan, Lisbon to London.
