Formed in Stockholm in 2003, rabble-rousing Swedish punks The Baboon Show are currently marking their 20th anniversary on a European tour<\/span> in support of their tenth album, \u2018God Bless You All\u2019. <\/span>Taking in dates across Spain, Poland, Austria, Germany and their homeland, the tour has seen the band\u2019s longstanding front-of-house engineer Chris Mock employing an Allen & Heath <\/span>dLive<\/span> digital mixing system and Audio-<\/span>Technica<\/span> 3000 Series IEM wireless <\/span>to deliver the band\u2019s potent brand of punk-rock energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mock opted for the <\/span>super-<\/span>compact <\/span>dLive<\/span> CTi1500, with its weight-saving titanium <\/span>sidepanels<\/span>, connected to a <\/span>dLive<\/span> CDM32 <\/span>MixRack<\/span> for the <\/span>shows, <\/span>resulting in<\/span> a diminutive but powerful and flexible touring partner<\/span>,<\/span> as he explains\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe <\/span>CTi<\/span> was my first choice, since I normally tour with a <\/span>dLive<\/span> C2500 surface. The set-up needed to be as small and lightweight as possible but working with iPads or laptops and touch screens <\/span>only <\/span>wasn\u2019t an option for me, so we decided on the beautiful CTi1500<\/span>,<\/span> on which I can run the same setup already used on my C2500.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI love the almost analogue feel of working on <\/span>dLive<\/span>. It\u2019s really fast and intuitive in use \u2013 I work with a lot of effects and ride a lot of faders during the show and the CTi1500 allows me to mix in a very dynamic, hands-on way. It\u2019s a really great creative tool in that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A total of 32 inputs come from stage into the CTi1500<\/span>,<\/span> including a pair of electric guitar mics<\/span>, <\/span>a \u201cdirt mic\u201d on <\/span>Niclas<\/span> Svensson\u2019s<\/span> drum kit, ambient microphones etc. Despite its small <\/span>footprint<\/span>, the surface\/<\/span>MixRack<\/span> combo handles FOH and monitor duties with ease, as <\/span>Mock describes, \u201cAll signals are split internally, so each input has a channel for the FOH and another one for the in-ear mix which is sent to six stereo mixes. Our backline tech \/ monitor engineer uses an iPad connected to the CDM32 to make changes during the show and it works perfectly.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The power of the CTi1500\u2019s internal effects engine has also helped simplify Mock\u2019s workflow, negating the need for external plug-ins, \u201cI do have an optional Waves v2 card in my C2500, which I mostly use for recording,\u201d he explains, \u201cbut I stopped working with external plug-ins because, to be honest, the on-board tools in the <\/span>dLives<\/span> are so good I <\/span>really have everything I need.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I<\/span> use <\/span>a lot of compression <\/span>with The Baboon Show <\/span>and love the parallel compression feature every compressor features. <\/span>T<\/span>he VCA spills<\/span> are also super useful<\/span>, which opens up a whole new dimension of layers if you\u2019re working on a small <\/span>surface<\/span> like the CTi1500. This way I can access all 64+ channels, groups, effect sends and returns on the 12 fade<\/span>r<\/span>s I have. I use some of the <\/span>SoftKeys<\/span> for DCA spills which is amazing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Besides that I love the new Bus Compressor which I combine with the multiband compression of the Dyn8 to glue my main mix together. This combination is a game changer!<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The move<\/span> from<\/span> traditional wedges to<\/span> an in-ear monitoring system <\/span>is not always easy and, as Mock says, took some adjust<\/span>ing<\/span> to but the Audio-Technica 3000 Series IEMs in conjunction with the CTi1500 made things as easy as possible. \u201cThe band loves the sound of the Audio-Technica system and it\u2019s really easy and quick to set-up. The crew really appreciate the <\/span>simple <\/span>design and functionality of the IEMs and the Wireless Manager software really unlocks the power of the system. <\/span><\/p>\n
