Posteriormente, realiz\u00f3 su doctorado en el Laboratorio del Habla y la Audici\u00f3n del Departamento de Ciencias Humanas de la Universidad de Loughborough (Reino Unido). Desde 1993 se ha dedicado en exclusiva a las ciencias de la audici\u00f3n. Tal como afirma en Dr. L\u00f3pez Poveda, \u201c<em>as\u00ed podemos simular c\u00f3mo se codifican los sonidos en el o\u00eddo sano y c\u00f3mo dejan de codificarse cuando existen da\u00f1os. UNEVA, en concreto, est\u00e1 cofinanciada por la Junta de Castilla y Le\u00f3n y el Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional a trav\u00e9s del programa INFRARED, y en otra parte -m\u00e1s importante- por entidades privadas y empresas multinacionales del \u00e1mbito de la audiolog\u00eda: empresas que dise\u00f1an t\u00e9cnicas y herramientas de diagn\u00f3stico, o que dise\u00f1an o fabrican aud\u00edfonos e implantes cocleares. Esto les permite trabajar directamente con quien dise\u00f1a la tecnolog\u00eda, lo que ha propiciado que el laboratorio posea diversas patentes de invenciones propias, que han vendido a empresas con las que colaboran y que financian sus investigaciones para dise\u00f1ar, por ejemplo, los implantes cocleares del futuro. Buena muestra de ello es el trabajo que han venido desarrollando durante nueve a\u00f1os con una empresa para desarrollar un nuevo m\u00e9todo de procesado de sonido para implantes cocleares; se espera que est\u00e9 m\u00e9todo se incorpore en un dispositivo comercial.<\/p>\n<p>El coraz\u00f3n de esta nueva Unidad de Evaluaci\u00f3n es su sala de ac\u00fastica variable. Ha sido insonorizada y equipada con paneles que se pueden abrir o cerrar para regular la reverberaci\u00f3n y la absorci\u00f3n, y que permite evaluar la audici\u00f3n de las personas en entornos realistas. La sala tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 apantallada el\u00e9ctricamente, ya que est\u00e1 forrada con una malla de metal (jaula de Faraday).<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan se ha observado, las personas que tienen problemas de audici\u00f3n y utilizan aud\u00edfonos o implantes cocleares apenas tienen problemas para comprender el habla cuando no hay reverberaci\u00f3n, pero cuando aparece la reverberaci\u00f3n tienen muchas dificultades. Hemos creado un anillo de altavoces, ahora formado por 24 altavoces, pero podr\u00edamos poner m\u00e1s. La idea es que el participante en un experimento se siente en la silla, y apoye o no la barbilla en un soporte especial. Tambi\u00e9n hay un micr\u00f3fono, porque una prueba t\u00edpica consiste en reproducir una frase, una palabra o una conversaci\u00f3n en presencia de otras frases, palabras o ruido que procede de otros altavoces. Por ejemplo, se reproduce una frase a trav\u00e9s del altavoz 1, el oyente tendr\u00eda que repetirla, y en el fondo hay ruido y otros altavoces est\u00e1n reproduciendo otras fuentes de habla. Si repite correctamente lo que ha o\u00eddo, subimos el nivel de ruido. Cuanto m\u00e1s ruido y m\u00e1s locuciones se utilizan aumenta la dificultad para entender adecuadamente la locuci\u00f3n principal. Se pueden manipular m\u00e1s las condiciones de audici\u00f3n abriendo o cerrando los paneles ac\u00fasticos de la sala<\/em>\u201d, nos explica el Dr. L\u00f3pez Poveda.<\/p>\n<p>La instalaci\u00f3n permite evaluar la audici\u00f3n de personas que sufren patolog\u00edas auditivas en diferentes condiciones: por s\u00ed sola, con aud\u00edfonos o sin aud\u00edfonos, con implantes o sin ellos, y resulta imprescindible para evaluar el rendimiento de los dispositivos que se dise\u00f1an.
